What this means
Compare the share of people with access to electricity across countries.
Higher share of the population has access to electricity; lower share of the population has access to electricity.
Methodology & source
Values are World Bank World Development Indicators EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS: access to electricity as a percentage of the population (SDG 7.1.1). The original producer is the World Bank Global Electrification Database; World Bank is the UN custodian. World Bank WDI is the import and redistribution path. Tracking SDG 7 / ESMAP report Excel, IEA Energy Access, and Our World in Data are not used. Access counts people whose primary lighting source is a local electricity provider, solar systems, mini-grids, or stand-alone systems. Generators, candles, and batteries used as backup or limited sources are excluded. WDI republishes a mixed series of nationally representative household surveys and censuses, a multilevel nonparametric model for missing country-years, and a documented assumption of 100 percent access in high-income years unless a survey exists. WDI does not provide a usable observation-status flag for each country-year, so the layer is classified as modelled rather than observed household-survey results. Published 100 percent values include those high-income assumptions and are kept and ranked; they are not described as household-survey observations. The metric is not electricity reliability, affordability, consumption, generation mix, grid connections only, or a Multi-Tier Framework quality score. It is distinct from Electricity Mix, which measures generation fuel shares. 2025 is omitted because WDI currently publishes that year as empty. 1960-1989 are empty API years. 1990-1999 is not advertised because coverage is sparse and the early panel is dominated by assumed 100 percent values. Country differences in survey timing, model fills, and source revisions remain in the published series and are not smoothed. OurBlueDot does not interpolate, fill missing years, replace missing values with zero or 100, or add estimates. There are no published zeros in this vintage; if a later vintage publishes zero it would be kept and ranked. Country rows are joined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3; regional and income aggregates are excluded. Territories outside UN-193, including WDI entities PSE and XKX, are not added to the country registry. Map ranks are comparable-sample competition ranks among currently loaded countries (rank 1 is the highest electricity-access share). Higher values are generally more favorable for energy access; the indicator is not a complete measure of service quality or welfare. Missing countries remain without a value.
