What this means
Compare forest area as a percentage of each country's land area.
Higher forest share of land area; lower forest share of land area.
Methodology & source
Values are World Bank World Development Indicators AG.LND.FRST.ZS: forest area as a percentage of land area, from FAOSTAT Land Use / FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment. Forest is land of more than 0.5 hectares with tree canopy cover of more than 10 percent and trees able to reach 5 meters in situ, excluding agricultural tree crops and urban parks. FAO FRA is collected at 5-10 year intervals; FAOSTAT/WDI publish an annual series by linearly interpolating between FRA years (1990, 2000, 2010, 2015, 2020) and linearly extrapolating 2021-2023 from the 2015-2020 growth rate. OurBlueDot does not interpolate, fill missing years, or replace missing values with zero; true source zeros are kept. Country rows are joined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3; regional and income aggregates are excluded. Map ranks are comparable-sample competition ranks among currently loaded countries (rank 1 is the highest forest-area share). Missing countries remain without a value.
