Methodology

Values are World Bank World Development Indicators SP.DYN.TFRT.IN: fertility rate, total (births per woman). UN DESA Population Division World Population Prospects 2024 is the underlying producer; World Bank WDI is the import path. The figure is a period total fertility rate — the number of children a woman would have if she experienced the age-specific fertility rates of the specified year throughout her reproductive life. It is not crude birth rate, annual births per 1,000 population, adolescent fertility, completed family size, cohort completed fertility, population growth, wanted fertility, or a distance-to-replacement composite. Values are official modelled estimates whose inputs include vital registration, censuses, and surveys; demographic modelling is used where data are incomplete. WDI also lists national statistical offices and Eurostat among source families; those families coexist and are not labelled row by row. UN WPP 2024 treats 1950-2023 as estimates and 2024-2100 as projections; 2024 is therefore omitted even though WDI publishes that year. 2025 is omitted because WDI currently publishes that year as empty. OurBlueDot does not interpolate, fill missing years, replace missing values with zero, splice Human Fertility Database, OECD, Eurostat, Our World in Data, or direct WPP values, or add projections. Replacement fertility around 2.1 is contextual description only; it is not a source category and is not used to recode the map. Country rows are joined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3; regional and income aggregates are excluded. Territories outside UN-193, including WDI entities PSE and XKX, are not added to the country registry. Map ranks are comparable-sample competition ranks among currently loaded countries (rank 1 is the highest total fertility rate). Higher or lower values are not universally favorable. Missing countries remain without a value.
